Week 8 - 7 December 2022
Principals Message
Kia ora Koutou
It was lovely to have a number of parents enjoy our ‘Thank you” morning tea on Monday to show our appreciation for not only your support but also another opportunity to engage and meet other parents.
Have you ordered your Unmasked Album yet ? 62 albums have been sold and we would love more orders. The students have been recording on the weekend in Te Kōhanga and sound amazing.
You will receive the end of year snapshot on Monday 12th December. This will be emailed to you by your child’s teacher after school between 4-5:30pm.
All staff have spent considerable time developing class lists over a number of weeks.
Today children have spent the morning doing a variety of activities with their class for 2023. This is an important part of preparation in meeting their teacher and new class members. All students who are turning 5 at the beginning of the year also came for a visit and it was amazing to watch how confident they were in the learning space.
Next Monday we will provide another opportunity for the 2023 class to meet together in the learning space they will be in next year. You will receive a paper copy of the class list with a brief introduction from the teachers in the team.
We know that change is approached in many different ways, some find it more difficult than others and we are aware that this takes time. Please talk with your child about the opportunities for increasing friendships and reducing anxious feelings. One student I spoke with this morning said ``My class is fine, and I can still be with my friends cos they are all in the space anyway”.
Our staffing and placement of teams for next year are all confirmed. All of our teams are made up of composite classes apart from the New entrant class. It is important that teams are well connected and can work closely together. If classes are in the new part of the building, the team name is the name of the building.
We have made the decision to have our Year 1-3 classes move to be in the same vicinity as the new entrant area, close to the sandpit and so all classes can use the courtyard area together as a team. They will be called Team Ruru.
In Team Kōtare/Tieke we will have Jane Batchelor teaching in the team and she will be based in Kōtare. Each class is made up of year 4, year 5 and year 6 children.
The Year 7/ 8 classes are moving to Rooms 5 - 7 and we are creating a ‘common room’ space in Room 4 for our senior students to be able to use during the day where they will be able to also work independently. If anyone has a couch or comfy lounge chairs that are no longer needed we would love to make use of them in the common room. The students will decide on the team name at the beginning of the year.
Team Ruru - NE and Year 1-3
Ruru iti Judith Urry and Eleanor Ainsworth, Ruru 1 Emma Muirhead, Ruru 2 Emma Chapman, Ruru 3 Emma McElrea and Rose Baty.

We have been very fortunate to have Ollie Michie on our staff for a number of years. Ollie has provided excellent Before School care for many students, supported children across the school in a Teacher Aide role and shared his sport skills and enthusiasm with many. We congratulate him on being appointed to a full time Teacher Aide position at Wellington College and wish him all the very best. We know his presence at Wellington College will be appreciated by our Year 8’s who will be there next year.
This Friday we are looking forward to the leavers dinner, please make sure you have purchased your tickets. There has been plenty of activity and music happening in preparation for team hui’s and our whole school assembly next week.
We are aware that we have a few covid cases in the community and other illnesses. Some staff and students continue to wear masks and we are encouraging everyone to wash hands regularly and sanitize. Please keep your child at home if they are unwell.
As always, I am available if you would like to discuss anything with me.

School Picnic
Next Wednesday, December 14th we are going to go for a walk to Te Ahūmairangi together. We would love you to join us. We will all meet at Northland Park at 11:30 and from there we will depart in groups of classes. We will eat our lunch in the picnic area and then return to school between 1-1:30pm. Students will carry their drink bottle and lunch with them. The student reps will give out ice blocks to each class in the afternoon on our return. The students' reps are encouraging everyone to wear something with a little festive touch!

Friendships and Belonging https://northland.nz.schooltv.me/newsletter/friendship-belonging
It is not always easy for children and teenagers to always know how to manage friendships. Learning how to make new friends and keep them involves a number of skills every young person needs to understand and develop. For some these skills will come very naturally, allowing them to easily move between different friendship groups, sharing their experiences and opening up to new people. Friendships are full of ups and downs and it is better for kids to learn how to manage and build their own friendships, even though as an adult carer you may be tempted to interfere.
SchoolDocs - Policies
SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.

Talking about success is not always easy. There are many ways to describe success and sometimes we forget all the mahi that has gone into achieving many things.
How do you and your family view success? Lets encourage looking under the iceberg to validate progress and persistence.

Quality of the week - Tack
Tact is telling the truth kindly, with consideration for how your words will affect others. It is knowing what to say and what is better left unsaid. Tact is thinking before you speak. When you are tactful, you don’t tease or point out people’s differences to embarrass them. You are as careful about others’ feelings as you would like them to be of yours.
