Principal's Message
Kia ora Koutou
We have had a week of celebration and farewells to mark the end of 2023. Firstly I would like to congratulate two past pupils of Northland who have reached great heights. Amelia Dunn- Dux of Wellington Girls College and Maddy Roberts who is one of the Head Students at Wellington Girls College for 2024.
Last Friday we had a fabulous evening being entertained by our talented year 8’s, sharing memories, accomplishments and feeling proud of the young people we are sending onto secondary school. In the final year, students vote for peers whom they feel stand out as modelling and demonstrating our school values. This year the following Year 8 students have been recognised for CHAMP’s awards and Principal Special awards.

I would like to acknowledge these families and thank them for their contribution to the school community over many years; Bisley, Cahalane, Clark, Doolan, Essery, Fisher, Hill, Hoffmann, Hurst, Janse, Just, Ketterer, O’Dell, Payton, Plant, Redgrave, Royle, Sparksman, Sweeny, Tervoort, and Walker.
During the year the Home and School have organised a variety of events and fundraisers. Thank you all for your work and a special mention to Rebecca Kelynack for leading this group over the last three years.
The staff at Northland school work very hard and I would like to thank everyone for their commitment throughout the year, the new learning and challenges that we have worked through. There are exciting opportunities for 2024, however we all need to pause and take time to recharge over the break.
We have all benefited from the significant contributions to Northland School by Jane Batchelor, our Assistant Principal. Jane has been instrumental in curriculum, leadership and the development of the school values that are the foundation for many of our decisions and the CHAMP initiative. Jane, we wish you all the best at your new school and know the children will be lucky to be taught by you.
Thank you to Fiona Valentine for your years at Northland, your literacy leadership and flexibility, we wish you well for your venture to Gisborne. Katie McGrath we thank you for your tremendous work in developing Kāpa haka and increasing the many opportunities for performance groups, cultural days, artsplash, patrol organisation and more recently the excitement for Pedal Ready and Movin march across the school. We wish you all the very best to both of you for the coming year.
Thank you Emma Muirhead for beginning your teaching career at Northland and we wish you all the best for your future and to Grace Cornejo, thank you for teaching our youngest learners and being so adaptable.
Finally thank you to the Board for your support and guidance throughout the year. We have done a lot of mahi, the community consultation affirms our progress and supports us to plan the details for the future direction.
Our final community assembly is this Friday at 9.30am at the Northland Community Centre, look forward to seeing you there. School then finishes at 12pm.
Have a wonderful holiday and safe travels. We look forward to seeing everyone who is able to pop in from 1pm on the 30th January to meet teachers, visit the classrooms and catch up with friends. We will have the BBQ and a sausage sizzle during this afternoon too. School starts on 31st January at 8:55am.
Ngā mihi nui

Board Update
Kia ora koutou
After the leavers dinner on Friday night, it really does feel like we're nearing the end of the year. An amazing team of volunteers - including our year seven servers - made it a very special evening for our year eights. They really are a talented and energetic group, and it is clear their time at Northland School has set them up to make the most of the opportunities that college will bring.
I'd also like to acknowledge those of our staff who are departing this year - Jane, Fiona, Emma, and Katie. You've made a huge contribution to the school and its community. We know you too are taking up exciting new opportunities, but we'll be sad to see you go.
We had our last board meeting for the year on Wednesday. It was a pleasure to welcome our two newest members, Jaqui and Richard. The board co-opted me to continue as presiding member until our first meeting next year, and Justin to carry on in the property portfolio until the end of the first term. It's been great to see the classroom refresh nearing completion and it will be so exciting for our akonga to be in the newly renovated rooms from the start of next year.
The board discussed the results from the community survey, which had a really great response rate. Rose did a huge amount of work to pull together all the feedback for the rest of the board, and a summary of the results is attached to this newsletter. I'd like to thank all of you who took the time to complete the survey, or to join one of the focus group sessions. Your views are hugely valued and provide real insights for Andrea and her team, and the board in its governance role, as we focus on strategy and priorities for 2024.
We've made great progress across the priorities we identified at the start of this year. Our values are shining through in our CHAMPs. The structured literacy programme is already having huge impact. So, there's lots of things to build on as we look to the new year.
As we head into the holiday season, I'd like to acknowledge all their hard work our wonderful staff have done throughout 2023. And the contributions of all those parents who have helped with school and community initiatives. I hope you all have a restful break and enjoy a chance to relax with whanau and friends.
Ngaa mihi
