31 January 2024 Week 1 - Term 1
Principal's Message
Kia ora Koutou
Welcome to 2024! We hope you have all had a good break and enjoyed the amazing weather we have been having lately. Our staff have been working together to get classroom spaces ready. We welcome Grant Henderson, Jane Finlayson, Alex Munro, Charles Dawson, Anna Breen and Neil Sargisson to our teaching staff.
Starting new to our school today are Jack A, Tāne, Oliver, Aiden, Yousuf, Nico, Eloise, Alby and Bodham, we hope you had a great 1st day and enjoyed our traditional 1st day iceblock.
Last week Teachers have been energised during professional development on our Structured Literacy approach with Liz Kane and Dr Helen Walls who are leading experts in New Zealand. We are well on our way with our development of programmes across the school and can assure you we will continue to teach reading, writing and math for an average of one hour a day in each subject. On Friday afternoon we all enjoyed a clay workshop at Victoria University and were able to create and be inspired to bring clay into our programmes at some point during 2024.
Our cellphone policy states our students must hand their device to the class teacher at the beginning of the day, this will be kept in a safe teacher cupboard. The student can collect the device at the end of the day. We have successfully implemented this throughout 2023 and will continue to do so. You may like to read the full policy that can be found on SchoolDocs.
It was lovely to see so many families yesterday afternoon for our Open afternoon and sausage sizzle. We appreciate this event does make a difference to a positive start and today we all showed we are Northland CHAMPs.

At the start of the year we know there are alot of things that we need to inform you of and vice versa. We will have a newsletter for the next three weeks and then fortnightly. Newsletters will be sent via an email on a Wednesday.
Our main platform for communication is through HERO and you will need to make sure you have uploaded the HERO app. Details are on the school website. We are no longer using SeeSaw and will be introducing a similar feature through HERO.
The best way to communicate with your child’s teacher is via email. If there is an urgent need for your child’s teacher to be aware of something during the day, please contact the office and a message will be given to the teacher.
Tomorrow we will be sending home with every child the stationery invoice and further details about our communication methods so we can connect and work efficiently together.
We will be holding our mihi whakatau this Friday at 9:15 for all our new families, students and staff. This will be held in Te Kōhanga and it would be lovely to have parents join us.
Ngā mihi nui

Kelly Sports is back for Term 1 with our fun and exciting classes!. Kelly Sports encourages children to have fun, build confidence and to give sport a go. We believe that sport and physical activity has so much to offer young people; it improves fitness, develops communication skills, team work and gives them a place to channel their energy.
Back to School Sports (Years 0-4) – Monday’s 3.05pm-4.05pm – The sports we will focus on this term are: Athletics, Ultimate Frisbee, Turbo Touch and Dodgeball.
It’s a great way to try new sports, learn new skills and improve ability. We use games & drills to teach game sense and team play. Your child will learn the basic fundamental skills for all sports – throwing, running, jumping, striking, balance and many more – all while having a great time!
Sessions start on Monday 12 February 2024 and run for 8 weeks.
