7 February 2024 Week 2
Principal's Message
Kia ora Koutou
I hope everyone enjoyed Waitangi Day and took time to participate in some of the events in Wellington to reflect Te Tiriti o Waitangi. I had the privilege of spending time in January at Waitangi grounds and gaining a deeper understanding of our history, it is a beautiful part of the country.
I was incredibly proud of all our students and staff during our mihi whakatau last Friday as we welcomed new staff and families to Northland. Our whaikarero (speech) leaders are Matthew and Vinnie, Sam is our kaea (haka leader) and Evie, Cerys, Elizabeth and Alexis share the Kaikaranga (call) when we have our mihi whakatau.
It was special to hear both staff and students speak te reo, hear children speak other languages and our kapa haka sing confidently. Visitors were very complimentary of our school spirit and how all our students demonstrated the importance of the event and the manaaki shown. Current families are always welcome to join us as tangata whenua at these events.
At Northland School we use the Zones of Regulation as a way of helping students understand their emotions and learn strategies to regulate. When students are regulated they can learn their best. Emotions are placed under colours - red, yellow, blue and green. These colours demonstrate the intensity of the emotion. Students have created posters for Northland School which are displayed around the different spaces and in the playground. Please see further details in the Zones section of the newsletter or our website.Northland School
There are calm classrooms, and routines are being established in all our teams. I have been really impressed with the way all of our Northland Champs have started the year.
We are working hard to make sure our students are aware of expectations for digital safety when using chromebooks or ipads at school. Further details are in the Digital Citizen section of the newsletter. Your child will bring home our Digital Citizenship agreement today. Please read with them and return the signed portion.
Last week we sent home our communication guidelines, we hope it has made it to your fridge or a place that you refer to often. If you need help with HERO please come to the office and Ann or Julia will assist you or email your child’s teacher. Our newsletters are sent via an email from schoolzineplus.com. and also uploaded to our website on Wednesday.

Tips from Netsafe to support your child with digital safety
Set up a filter on your home wifi
- Use "Switch on Safety" (see Netsafe website)
- Set a filter on your home router
Have regular, neutral conversations with your child about their online activities
- What are you playing?
- What are you sharing?
- Who's in your network?
Explore sites, apps and games before your child does
- Check things out on "Common Sense Media"
- Ask your child to show you their app, game...
Set and agree on boundaries with your child
- Screen time - how much depends on each family's values
- Where and when devices can be used
NB: avoid removing devices as a consequence (your child is less likely to come to you if they have a problem online if they're worried you will take their technology away)
Manage and model online privacy and safety
- Use passwords and PINs
- Don't share personal information (make use of privacy settings, use nicknames)
- Think before you post
- Keep it friendly
Have a plan if harm occurs
- Stay calm
- Evaluate the situation
- Understand the effect on your child (ask how they're feeling)
- Avoid taking away the technology
- Work through a plan together: don't engage, block the other party, report the issue to Netsafe (and the social media platform if applicable), get support from family and friends
For more details and information on any and all of the above, please go to the Netsafe website: https://netsafe.org.nz/advice/parenting/. It has lots of great advice and is a powerful and helpful NZ organisation if anything goes wrong online.
Road Patrol - Supervisors Needed
Today we have had patrol training for our year 6 and year 7 students. This is a very responsible role and we would like to ask if there are any parents who are able to help supervise patrols between 8:30-9am or 2:50-3:15 on any day. Please email the office with the day and time you are able to assist.
