May 1, 2024 Week 1
Principal's Message
Kia ora koutou,
Welcome to new families. We have starting in Ruru ītī Arie, Emily, and Pete in Ruru 1 and returning to Northland Christian in Kākā 6.
We welcome Hayley to our staff who will be in the office weekly on Wednesdays and Fridays. Ann will be in the office on the other days each week.
We are excited for term two and to have the fine weather continue. Teachers have been busy reviewing last term and planning programmes with a variety of experiences and new learning opportunities. It has been a very positive start for everyone.
We continue with our expectations for Northland CHAMPS and creating a positive climate by being;
- Polite, courteous and respectful.
- Being kind to others, peers, adults and visitors.
- Being upstanders and inclusive.
- Showing understanding and empathy to others.
C - confident
H - hikohiko
A - auahatanga
M - manaaki
P - pataitai
We will be holding our mihi whakatau next Friday at 9:15 for all new families, students and staff.
A newsletter will be provided for the next three weeks and then fortnightly for the remainder of this term. Newsletters will be sent via an email on a Wednesday before 4pm. Team Newsletters will be uploaded on HERO in week 3 and week 7 of the term. You will also receive other communication on HERO from teachers throughout the term, particularly when swimming or events are taking place in your child’s class or team.
Our main platform for communication is through HERO and you will need to make sure you have uploaded the HERO app. Details are on the school website for both HERO and our Northland Communication guidelines.
The best way to communicate with your child’s teacher is via email. If there is an urgent need for your child’s teacher to be aware of something during the day, please contact the office and a message will be given to the teacher.
I am sure you will be aware of the focus on attendance in schools as every day counts for learning, consolidating and belonging. It is important that we value being at school, we are able to support you if you need help with a positive routine for being on time or settling in the morning. We appreciate the emails and phone calls to the office when children are sick, going for an appointment or will be arriving late.
Our school attendance rates in Term 1 2024 are below.
Present 0-70% | Present 71-80% | Present 81-90% | Present 91-100% | Late |
0.84% | 7% | 23% | 70% | 0.58% |
Justified absence - medical, bereavement, exam, stood down, suspended, overseas posting
Accepted but unjustified absence - holiday, unexplained/trivial, unknown
I am very aware that some of our families are fortunate to take time during the term to go on oversea’s holidays, however this is an unjustified absence from the Ministry. Teachers will not be providing work when parents have opted to take children out of the school programme. I would appreciate a courtesy email from you outlining the dates any child will be off school due to a holiday and including the class teacher in the email. Attendance will be discussed at our next board meeting.
During this term we are planning two parent workshops that will focus on Structured Literacy at Northland and Positive Behaviour for learning (Northland CHAMPS). There will also be an opportunity for parents to contribute ideas or activities to celebrate Matariki on 26th June.
If you would like to come and chat, or have questions or concerns, please get in touch with any of the senior leadership team, Andrea, Judith and Grant.
Ngā mihi nui
Andrea
Mihi whakatau
We will be holding our mihi whakatau next Friday at 9:15 for all new families, students and staff. New families will meet in the Library at 9:00 and our student leaders will brief you (manuhiri) on protocol and procedure. This will be held in Te Kōhanga and it would be lovely to have parents (tangata whenua) join us to welcome new members to our community.
Working Bee
We are looking forward to our next Working Bee on Sunday 26th May from 1- 4pm or Sunday 9th June if needed due to unsuitable weather. Matt George is coordinating people, tools and tasks that we can all contribute towards tidying up our grounds, planting and working together. Please contact Matt on mattgeo23@gmail.com if you are able to help. We will have a sausage sizzle too.
Taking pride in our grounds
We love that you come with your fur babies on a lead to the school. However our/your kids are helping us with gardening and taking pride in our school grounds. Unfortunately we are coming across dog poo in newly planted areas. Please if you bring your dog onto school grounds, bring a poo bag and clean up.
