Principal's Message
Kia ora koutou,
Welcome Thrisha and her family to Northland School.
The last two weeks have been busy with a great variety of experiences happening across the school and many of our students representing Northland at Miniball and the Western Zone Cross Country. During the weekend I was able to watch some of our netball teams play and some of our year 8 students umpire games, not an easy task.
A big congratulations to all students who did so well at the Western Zone Cross Country yesterday. You demonstrated being a Northland Champ, highlighting both resilience and confidence.
On Sunday we had our first working bee for the year, it was a pleasure to be cooking the BBQ with Judith for you all. A huge thank you to Matt for coordinating and to all parents and students who came for a number of hours to weed, waterblast, plant, clean shelves and do a tip run. The working bee was well supported by board members and the home and school. We hope many of you have noticed the planting on the pathways at the entrance of the school, and the tidy up at the courts.
On Tuesday we were fortunate to have members of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra provide a Creative Music Workshop with students from Tieke. This was led by guest Animateur Rachel Leach, and NZSO Animateur Chris Lam Sam. Our students learnt a little about the story of Stravinksy’s Firebird Suite and enjoyed creating music together.
We are well into our rollout of Structured Literacy across our school. Yesterday Judith shared with parents our approach. It was great to have such a good turnout and hear from you what you are noticing in your children’s learning. On the 18th of June we will have two more parent sessions for those of you with children in Kōtare and Kākā.
One of our key initiatives over the last year has been (PB4L) Positive Behaviour for Learning. We are focused on developing our positive school culture and expectations that support everyone to feel belonging and valued.
Our parent evening next Wednesday 5th June, will provide you with background information on PB4L and our journey so far. We would like to gather input from you on prosocial behaviours and the development of the Northland CHAMPS.
We have reviewed our sharing of learning and reporting timeline for this term and want to make sure you know what information to look out for. Please read the Sharing of Learning and Reporting section. If you have not signed up for HERO, this will be a barrier to you receiving progress on your child's learning and our school communications.
A gentle reminder that this Friday the school is closed for our Teacher Only Day. Enjoy the long weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday 4th June.
If you would like to come and chat or have questions or concerns please get in touch with any of the senior leadership team, Andrea, Judith and Grant.
Ngā mihi
Andrea
Reporting and Learning
At the end of the year parents expressed the need for frequent progress, measurement and reporting, active engagement in children's performance, and individual communications about children’s progress.
Through our HERO platform we have developed sharing of learning posts that teachers will provide each term. These may include photos, samples of work, a brief recording or documentation. We have reviewed our sharing of learning and reporting timeline for this term and want to make sure you know what information to look out for.
Term 1
- We shared progress in reading, writing, maths and other curriculum areas.
- We held learning conversations with you, shared goals in Literacy and Maths and suggested how you could help at home.
Term 2
- Sharing Learning about a curriculum area and learning dispositions.
- Sharing of Mahi Rangahau, our inquiry focus.
In the last week of Term 2 you will receive the following reports to provide you with a clear understanding of how your child is progressing at the midpoint of the year.
- Reading Report, Writing Report and Maths Report that will inform you of progress and achievement.
- A Curriculum Level statement and graph to show progress and achievement in Reading, Writing and Math in relation to expectations in the New Zealand Curriculum for the year level.
It is our hope that you are feeling well informed about your child’s learning and know you can contact your child’s teacher to follow up as you need. You are encouraged to pop in and arrange a time to talk with teachers or to look at your child’s work before or after school.
Parent Workshop PB4L
We are running a parent workshop next week.
One of our key initiatives over the last year has been (PB4L) Positive Behaviour for Learning. We are focused on developing our positive school culture and expectations that support everyone to feel belonging and valued.

Kura Acknowledgement
Kia ora e te whānau,
We have filled the token box in the office and earnt our whole kura celebration. On Friday, 7th June we will be having a games and hot chocolate session during the middle block.
Students are welcome to bring a game to share with their classmates. We ask that students do not bring in any electronic games (Nintendo etc). Anything brought in will be the students responsibility to look after. We will have theatre sports, parachute and a number of other games available. We will have hot chocolate (and df/gf alternatives) during morning tea eating time, so please send your child to school with a mug.
We need some volunteers to help make and distribute hot chocolate from 10.50 - 11.20 on Friday 7th June. If you are able to help please email Emma (emmac@northland.school.nz)
Ngā mihi,
Emma Chapman

Sickness and Absence
There is a lot of sickness in and around our community - please be vigilant with handwashing and hygiene. We are aware of covid, tummy bugs and the flu. If your child is unwell we would appreciate you keeping them at home, if they have an upset tummy 48 hours is required before they return.
The absence email has been removed from the website to streamline the process. The best way to report your child's absence is through the HERO App or via email to the school office office@northland.school.nz. If your child is sick on consecutive days we do still need notification from a parent/cargiver to confirm they will not be at school. If your child is late to school, after 8.55am they must report to the school office to be marked correctly on the roll.
Team Directory
We would like to give each student a Team Contact Directory so you can establish relationships outside of school. Can you please let us know by Wednesday 12 June if you DO NOT wish to be on this contact list.
We will be using Names, contact email and 1 mobile phone number.
