Principal's Message
Kia ora koutou
Welcome to Elliot and her whānau to Northland School.
On Monday, Senior Leaders from five schools, who are also implementing Positive Behaviour for Learning and some Ministry of Education facilitators, took part in a workshop at our school. We were very proud of our Year 7 and Year 8 kapa haka students who led the mihi whakatau so confidently and demonstrated being Northland CHAMPS. The visitors commented on our students' te reo, waiata, and confidence. This was particularly noteworthy as they performed without Hemi or Lyndsey supporting. It was a very proud moment for myself, Emma and Grant who were taking part in the workshop. Please read more details on the current work we are doing in the PB4L section.
Last Friday we shared a post of all of our students enjoying dancing as part of our acknowledgement day for Northland CHAMPs. The hot chocolate and games session went very well and the video on HERO shows there is a positive school spirit.
During our last teacher only day we focused on our teaching of te reo, celebrated how we are weaving the pūrakau of Te Ātiawa into our programmes and the enthusiasm our students show for kapa haka. We were encouraged by Ngahiwi Apanui-Barr - CEO Maori Language Commission - 'why it is important to teach te reo, te ao Māori and tikanga Māori to all students of Aotearoa in 2024'.
We will be celebrating Matariki on Tuesday 25th June from 5:30- 7pm and would love to have many families join us. Kapa haka will open and close our event, the music group will perform, there will be a variety of fun matariki activities set up in Ruru for everyone to enjoy. We will also provide a sausage sizzle and soup. If you are able to provide a crockpot of soup please contact the office. Further details will be sent out closer to the time, so save the date.
Over the last few weeks we have had a number of parents attending workshops. Thank you for taking the time to come and learn with us about structured literacy or contribute ideas towards our implementation of positive behaviour for learning. We appreciate your feedback and encouragement.
Next Tuesday 18th June we will run a structured literacy session at 2pm and 7pm in the Library. This will focus on our approach for the Year 4-8 age groups. Please RSVP to the office for either session, office@northland.school.nz.
Lastly, I would like to thank the Home and School for all the mahi that has gone into the Pie Fundraiser over the last few months. We have a group of parents who have kindly offered to help tomorrow with sorting over 700 pies in Te Kōhanga. See further details in the Pie Delivery section.
If you would like to come and chat or have questions or concerns please get in touch with any of the senior leadership team, Andrea, Judith and Grant.
Ngā mihi
Andrea
Positive Behaviour for Learning at Northland
We have worked with staff and students to develop our Northland School Mahi Champs. Our expectations are clear and shared across the school. We have established a group of students who are working closely with Emma to provide feedback and great ideas on ways to acknowledge our mahi. We are noticing students are more aware of expectations and the use of simple language is assisting everyone.
Positive Behaviour for Learning School Wide (PB4L-SW) Statement at Northland
At Northland School we are implementing Positive Behaviour for Learning School Wide (PB4L-SW) to enhance our positive and caring learning environment. We believe positive behaviours can be taught. Children need to be taught how to behave just like they are taught how to read and write. Some children require extra time and practise to behave in the way we would expect them to, here at Northland School.
- We will develop with the community clear expectations for positive behaviour, ways to affirm our expectations and clear guidelines for consequences that are consistent.
- We expect all staff, students, parents and whanau to model positive behaviours for these expectations to be successful.
- We will develop clear expectations and understanding of steps to use in restorative practices to find solutions that will build stronger partnership and ownership for everyone at Northland.
It’s not about changing the students; it’s about changing the environment, systems, and practices you have in place to support them to make positive behaviour choices.
Sharing of Learning and Reporting
At the end of the year parents expressed the need for frequent progress, measurement and reporting, active engagement in children's performance, and individual communications about children’s progress.
Through our HERO platform we have developed sharing of learning posts that teachers will provide each term. These may include photos, samples of work, a brief recording or documentation. We have reviewed our sharing of learning and reporting timeline for this term and want to make sure you know what information to look out for.
Term 2
- Sharing Learning about a curriculum area and learning dispositions.
- Sharing of Mahi Rangahau, our inquiry focus.
In the last week of Term 2 you will receive the following reports to provide you with a clear understanding of how your child is progressing at the midpoint of the year.
- Reading Report, Writing Report and Maths Report that will inform you of progress and achievement.
- A Curriculum Level statement and graph to show progress and achievement in Reading, Writing and Math in relation to expectations in the New Zealand Curriculum for the year level.
It is our hope that you are feeling well informed about your child’s learning and know you can contact your child’s teacher to follow up as you need. You are encouraged to pop in and arrange a time to talk with teachers or to look at your child’s work before or after school.
