Principal's Message
Term 1 Week 4 2025
Wednesday 19th February
Kia ora koutou
We are in the full swing of classroom programmes, routines and the start of a variety of sports events in the Western area. Team Kākā are out swimming today and they visit Space Place as part of the Mahi Rangahau inquiry into Celestial navigation and early Polynesian exploration tomorrow.
We will be focusing on Basic Facts as part of our maths lessons this term. Teachers are sharing a number of games and activities that will help to reinforce these both at school and as part of homework.

The Tiger Turf was busy last Friday with the Year 1-4 children enjoying Futsal coaching. Alex and Neil are planning more opportunities for sporting codes to come in so children are introduced to a wider variety of sporting codes.

We are delighted with the Year 7 and Year 8 students who have written letters to outline how they can contribute to the school as part of the Student Rep team. The Year 8 students who were part of the group last year will be leading events with a team of other reps for the first half of the year. Here are a few of the points from the letters I received. Lyndsey and I are excited with the energy that this group will bring.
I am keen on making fun memories for the entire school.
I think I would be a good fit for this role because I am organised, responsible.
I love being part of this school and I have already helped out with Road patrol, library and joined kapa haka.
When I was 5 I looked up to student reps and they looked out for me. I show kindness and curiosity.
I want to be part of changes at the school and I think it is an important part of growing as a Northland CHAMP. I have friends of all ages at Northland School and I am curious about what I am learning and pay attention.
I have experience with this kind of stuff and can explain something to a group of people
As a Tauira māori, I value whanaungatanga, building strong connections with others and I want to help make Northland school a place where everyone feels included and heard.
I would really like to join so I can give back to the school and contribute. I love working with the little kids.
I think our energy, work ethic, chemistry, ideas and execution last year was top class and we ran some amazing things well.
Our Student Reps for 2025 are Ellie, Reuben, Phoebe C, Maryam, Cerys, Millie, Maya, Matthew, Vinnie, Dais, Amelia, Isobel, Anna, Holly, Hettie, Lucy, Keira, Marni, Erin, Phoebe T, Greta and Charlotte.
The first big event will be the School Colour Run. Student Reps will be visiting classrooms to promote this and supporting the younger students during the event, and of course taking part themselves.
We are planning to run some English/ Structured Literacy parent workshops later this term. These will provide you with information on the teaching of English across the school within the new curriculum. We will also talk about Structured Literacy. These workshops will be run on Wednesday 19th March at 9am and 7pm. We would appreciate you emailing the office if you are able to attend either before Friday 14th March.
Ngā mihi
Andrea
UPDATE - Colour Fun Run

On March 6th we are holding our Colour Fun Run as a major fundraising event! We’re holding it to raise money for Kapa Haka outfits, bring in more talented performing artists to our school, and buy outdoor wooden cubby houses for our students to enjoy. The Colour Fun Run will be held at the park beside the school from 1.30-3pm and parents are welcome to come along if they can.
Are you Fundraising ?
The easiest way to help your child is through online fundraising. Go to schoolfunrun.co.nz, create a student profile page and share your online fundraising with your family and friends.
Prizes or Donate to a Great Cause
On top of raising money for the school, students who raise just $10 will be able to choose a prize OR instead of prizes families can opt in to have the Prize Money donated to one of these amazing causes Heart Foundation or KidsCan - all this info is in the Booklet! Prices must be ordered between March 15th and March 23rd .
NEW - Pizza Friday - March 7th
Pizza Friday is back!!!
All pizzas MUST be ordered by 1pm Wednesday 5th, we are unable to process late orders. This is to help with making orders easier due to the sheer amount of pizzas arriving.
The process is you pay online and we have paper slips in the school office to be filled in before 1pm on the Wednesday.
We also had pizzas ordered with no payment AND payments with no order, please make sure you remember to pay AND order.
REPEAT - Learning Conversations
Learning Conversations will take place on Tuesday 4th March and Wednesday 5th March between 3:15 and 7:45pm. We will have the library open during this time so children can read or play quiet games while you are meeting with teachers.
Bookings are open on HERO The purpose for these conversations are for you to share your aspirations for your child for the year and teachers to share how your child is settling into the year and discuss goals together.
The time slot allocated for each conversation is 15 minutes.
Details are on the website on how to book a learning conversation.
REPEAT - School Attendance
Kia ora tatou,
Students aged 6 to 16 years old (and enrolled 5-year-olds) are required to attend school every day. It’s everyone’s responsibility to make sure children attend and engage in learning from when they first start school. Regular attendance means the student is present for more than 90% of the term.
Whilst we understand that when students are unwell they need to be at home, if they are well, students need to be at school. With all of us working together, then we can provide the best education for the students at Northland School. If you need support with the morning routine or you have questions about your child’s attendance please let us know so we can help.
Naku noa,
Grant Henderson
Deputy Principal
